Five dog-friendly spots on the coast (and one to skip)

Our team spends a lot of weekends with their own dogs at the beach. Here's where we go between Cannon Beach and Newport, which places actually welcome dogs inside, and the one popular trail we'd leave the pup at home for.

Is my dog bored or anxious?

Chewing, barking and pacing can mean very different things. A few signs to tell them apart.

Five dog-friendly spots on the coast (and one to skip)

The Oregon coast is about as dog-friendly as it gets, but not everywhere is equal. These are the places our team keeps going back to.

1. Cannon Beach, north end

Wide, flat and less crowded than the stretch by Haystack Rock. Dogs can be off-leash under voice control, and there's a fresh-water creek that crosses the sand.

2. Oswald West State Park

Short forest walk down to Short Sand Beach. Leash on the trail, and watch the surfers' gear — some dogs find wetsuits very suspicious.

3. Manzanita

Seven miles of beach and a town where half the cafés keep a water bowl outside. Good for a slow Sunday.

4. Cape Lookout

The headland trail is 2.4 miles each way through old forest. Bring water; it's longer than it looks.

5. Nye Beach, Newport

Easy parking, easy walking, and a couple of dog-friendly places to stay overnight.

One to skip: tide pools at low tide

Lovely for people, not great for curious noses. Sea stars and anemones are protected, the rocks are slippery, and sneaker waves are real. Leave this one for a dog-free day.
